Fallout Game Story + Background Part 3

fallout 3 raiders

So this Fallout series quick introduction is coming to an end, this post is the last part. I'm considering to make videos in the near future and wish you guys can support me. :P

Back to Fallout, we'll be talking about raiders/gangs this time.

fallout game settlements  Raiders was always a trouble for settlements, particularly small ones. They exist almost everywhere in the wasteland and had great significance in Fallout. Raiders can be as small as a tiny group of thugs or as big as a battalion like the Great Khans. But they all make a living by raiding, plundering, trading drugs or enslaving people.

Raiders possess a threat to the player in all Fallout games. You might meet and kill many of them without knowing their story, that's why I'll tell you more information regarding to them.

Raiders in Fallout 3 belongs to no specific factions, they seemed to have no connection between groups, the bandits in Fallout 3 had neither a history nor interesting facts to talk about, so I'll give it a pass.

However, raiders in New Vegas have their own gangs, down below are some information/background of them.

Great Khans

Originally founded by the father of Garl Death-Hand, Great Khans are by far the most organized gang in the wasteland, They live a nomadic/Mongolian lifestyle, such as using tents as shelter and carry all possessions with them.

Great Khans had access to a steady supply of weapon, its armory was located in Spring Mt. Ranch State Park. Their gang members preferred to use guns instead of melee weapons. Their fighting style along with their large numbers is one of the reasons to their success.

fallout game drug trading
Unlike traditional raiders, Great Khans sustained themselves by producing drugs, hunt and farm besides robbing travelers or caravans. Their main consumers are the Fiends and NCR. Generally speaking, Great Khans is the most 'productive' gang in Fallout.

Back in Fallout 1, the Khans is one of the three gangs that came from Vault 15. And it was pretty successful at first until the Vault Dweller rescue the founder of NCR (Tandi), and wiped out the Khans in the process.

Darion, who was the only survivor of that incident, wanted to revenge against the Vault Dweller and Tandi. He then formed a new gang called the New Khans. The group expanded quickly due to his effort, but at the end, Darion was killed by the Chosen One, who was the grandchild of the Vault Dweller.......

Papa Khan, a follower of Darion, led the remaining members to the Mojave Wasteland. From there they built a thriving gang that had huge influence in Mojave, the Great Khans. But they met heavy resistance and retreated from New Vegas as Mr.House formed alliance with tribes against them. Even worse the NCR expanded into Mojave at that time.

Considering the history of NCR and Khans, it was no surprise that they went to war. The Great Khans gained the upper hand at first, the constant raiding of NCR outpost pushed them back. But Mr.House and NCR signed a treaty during the war, which allowed NCR to focus on Great Khans. With the Bitter Springs Massacre, the Great Khans finally retreated into Red Rock Canyon and settled there.

Although it was obvious that Great Khans was decaying because of its poor geological location, it is still one of the most influential gang in Fallout.

Fiends

Another huge gang in Fallout. Fiends don't have much of a history, they were mostly drug addicts. Their organization is loose as fiends were led by 4 leaders who shared similar ranks and members sometimes operate on their own.

Fiends are traditional raiders, they survive by looting their victims and raiding settlements. Even though their fighters might be the worst individually, their large territory and numbers helped them to become the most fearsome gang in the wasteland.

Long time ago, when the Fiends were finding a place to settle, Vault 3's inhabitants got out to trade with outsiders for water. This attracted the Fiends and they raided the Vault with great success. Afterwards Vault 3 had became their base of operations and home.

Jackals

Similar to the Khans, Jackals came from Vault 15 and once was a threatening gang roaming the wasteland.

Jackals is a group of brutal raiders that practice cannibalism, because of a winter storm that forced them to survive by eating their comrades.

Most of the Jackals are poorly armed, their organization is small. They will only attack easy targets. Also their leadership is weak as members will fight over each other for loots.

Vipers

Another gang originated from Vault 15. The vipers like to go out at night and they worship pit vipers (mutated giant snakes). Their fighting style is special, they tend to sneak instead of direct combat.

Overall, the Vipers is a weak gang. In my opinion, this is mainly because of their culture. Vipers in fact is a very religious group, they choose their members by giving them poisonous drinks to test their strength, which the failed ones would be killed and sacrificed to the snakes.

In the event of Fallout 1, Vipers grew rapidly and they brought disaster to everyone around badlands, their power base. This drew the attention of Brotherhood of Steel, and after the killing of a BoS soldier, both sides battle with each other. At the end Vipers were driven away and those who remained fled to the North/East.
