Lagging in multiplayer games can be really annoying, especially when it causes you to lose a match. I'll talk about some methods to stabilize your PC performance in online gaming.
Before going any further, you have to find out what makes your computer lag. Try switching servers and see whether the FPS improves, or play other online games to compare the FPS. If it is the problem of the game server, then nothing can be done by you. But if your PC is the troublemaker, you can follow the tips below to solve or at least relieve the lag.
The following solutions are tested by me and my friends, give me a shout in case these methods don't work for you.
1. Disable in-game shadows
This should provide a massive boost to your FPS, particularly when the map is large. Shadows eat up a huge chunk of your GPU resources, turning them off will give your computer an instant boost. However that won't help if your GPU is not the root of the problem.
2. Reduce resolution or texture pack quality
Texture pack can gives your CPU some serious pressure if it is uncompressed. The PC memory will then be affected and may cause lag spikes when it hits the limit. You can play in windowed mode if you don't want to sacrifice game graphics for performance.
3. Remove startup programs
Whenever you download applications, they may become startup programs, that means they will be loaded up automatically every time you turn on your PC, and stand by in the background. Bring up the task manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete), then click 'startup' (that may differ from each window version but the title is similar), next disable unnecessary programs that have high demand on your CPU. This will boost the overall performance of your PC if you didn't clean startup programs for a long time.
4. Configure virtual memory settings
Some PC may restrict the use of its memory, so not all RAM
available is allocated for gaming. This method do a great job on reducing lag, however it is risky to use because the whole game will shutdown when all RAM is not enough for the it to run, this will not happen frequently unless your computer's memory is really low. Follow these steps to free the RAM.
(1) Go to Control panel, and click on System and security
(2) Click on System
(3) Click on Advanced system settings
(4) Click on the Advanced tab
(5) Click on Settings under Performance
(6) Click on the Advanced tab
(7) Click on the Change button under Virtual memory
(8) Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, then click on No paging file and click Set
(9) Restart your PC and it should work
5. Use wired connection
This will reduce the occurrences of lag spike to nearly zero as wired connection is far more stable than using Wi-Fi. However, it does nothing to improve your PC performance, wired connection only stabilize your computer. But sudden disconnection is as miserable lag for a gamer, right?
Wish my post can help you to have better gaming experiences, without costing you a single dollar.
