Fallout Game Story + Background Part 2

fallout 3 cover photo

Hello again! This is the second part of Fallout background introduction.

Continue from the previous post, I'll talk about the Vaults. Basically they are bomb shelters for preserving humans in nuclear war, in some cases only. Many Vaults were used to run 'Vault experiments', which studied the behavior of humans under certain situations.

Most, if not all, experiments were inhuman. [Spoilers alert!!!] Taking Vault 11 as an example , its inhabitants were asked to select one person to sacrifice each year, otherwise the Vault will neutralize every person. People inside started to form gangs and kill each other, the sacrifice went on until only 5 survivors were left. They all agreed to stop sacrificing and die together. However, nothing had happened and they discovered that the Vault cheated all of them since day one, the Vault will run normally even no sacrifice was made. At the end four of the survivors committed suicide, the fate of the remaining one was unknown.

For the full list of vault experiment, check it out at here.

Another thing to talk about is the source of mutated/engineered creatures in Fallout that players will encounter throughout the game, not all of them were created naturally by radiation. Those I'll talk about include radroaches, mole rats, coyotes, centaurs, super mutants, geckos, ghouls, radscorpions, yao guai, night stalkers, cazadors and deathclaws.

Radroaches : Cockroaches mutated by radiation

fallout game mole rats

Mole Rats : You might think they are rats that were being mutated by radiation, but in fact, mole rats were engineered by the U.S. before the Great War. They were supposed to breed rapidly and attack citizens in China, furthermore 'kill switches' were implanted inside their body for quick disposal when U.S. take over those territories. Whether they successfully infiltrated China or not, it was certain that many of them remained after the war.

fallout game coyotes

Coyotes : Pure wild coyotes, it seemed the Great War didn't affect them physically.

Centaurs : Created by The Master, centaur is a mixture of humans, dogs and other animals that exposed to FEV virus together (that sounds really disturbing...). They are immune to radiation and sometimes gather around heavily radiated areas.

fallout game super mutants

Super Mutants : Another creation of The Master, super mutants serves as the army of him, they were humans infected by FEV virus. Super mutants are sterile, but they are immortal in theory (won't die naturally), and it seemed they will grow stronger and gain even more strength when aging. Some super mutants were created at Vault 87, where inhabitants were imprisoned in chambers containing FEV virus.

Geckos : The results of original geckos that exposed to FEV virus or radiation.

fallout game ghouls

Ghouls : Humans mutated by radiation. Their skin will rot and their hair will fall off. Glowing ones are severe cases, in which their skin will produce green light in the dark. Some ghouls retained their ability to think, but some became insane and were classified as feral ghouls.

Radscorpions : Scorpions mutated by radiation.

Yao Guai : Black bears mutated by radiation.

Night Stalkers : They were created in Big MT by Dr. Borous. As their appearance suggest, they are mixtures of rattlesnakes and coyotes.

fallout game cazadors

Cazadors : Created by Dr. Borous (again). They were mutated tarantula hawk wasps, and is one of the most dangerous enemies in Fallout. Dr. Borous sure knows how to make deadly animals.

fallout game deathclaws

Deathclaw : Being the one of the most threatening enemy in all Fallout games, deathclaw is not naturally mutated. Deathclaws were created before the Great War by the U.S. to substitute soldiers in close quarter combats. After the Great War they were further improved by The Master using the FEV virus, and they spread throughout the wasteland eventually.

That's it for part 2, next time I'll tell you guys more about different raiders scattered around the wasteland. Stay tuned for part 3!
