5 Tips To Aim Better At CS:GO

cs:go how to aim better cover photo

For some strange reasons, I'm not interested in playing CS games even I'm passionate at FPS games. A few days ago I had picked up my long forgotten CS: GO account again, which I found I had improved even without practicing it, I think it's mainly due to playing TF2. My friends were all surprised as they thought I will get massacred.

Again for some strange reasons I want to write this quick guide so bad. These tips are not training programs for practicing aiming, they are small tweaks that gives you an instant boost (big or small) in your accuracy. And here goes the list of my tips.

1. Disable mouse acceleration

Mouse acceleration is a burden for players in almost every FPS games. Even though it is convenient in rare occasions, most of the time your aiming will get worse because of it. A pro shooter memorize the corresponding movement of gun sight with the mouse, but the mouse acceleration makes aiming inconsistent.

Here is a small statistic from 10 of my friends who play CS: GO. Two friends out of 10 use mouse acceleration from day one to now, in which they are generally accepted to suck at aiming. On the other hand, one of my friends who disabled mouse acceleration after chatting with me about that achieved a much better KDR later on (increased from about 3 to 4-5).

So all your effort put on practicing aiming will net you little to no rewards with mouse acceleration on. That's certainly
a tragedy, isn't it?

2. Find the most suitable mouse sensitivity

There are many ways to test the best mouse sensitivity for each players. One of the most popular method is by keeping the crosshair on a small area while strafing, adjust your mouse sensitivity to the point where you find doing so is the easiest. And that is the optimal sensitivity for you!

Many players have the misconception that the most accurate setting is the one they are comfortable with. This is not true because for the 'comfortable' feeling, it means the camera movement is very similar to what we wanted. However, the sensitivity setting that feels the most natural is not always the sensitivity setting that let us aim the best. Don't follow your heart, use scientific methods to search for the ideal sensitivity.

3. Take short bursts instead of long ones

This may seems obvious at first, but most people only follow this rule in the early minutes of a lengthy game. As soon as they get dominated, they will empty their magazines pretty quick.

Long firing is not a bad idea in some situations, like retreating or in close range combats, where accuracy is not a top priority. However, in normal fights long burst are only 'comfort shots' that sounds threatening. There is no accuracy in sustained fire. The first two shots will land exactly at where you aim, but others tend to go upwards, then left or right, and they fly like a mess. Just don't let your temper rule over you.

4. Aim for the neck level

Many people may tell you to aim for the head level of enemies. But in fact, only a few can really hit as both you and your target are moving, and this likely is what actually happened: You see him running out of the corner, you open fire, and try to get your cursor on his head, which is too late as the recoil start to kick in, and your shots are flying above his head.

Aiming at the neck gives you room for error, so you can line up your shots to left/right, and let the recoil push up your shots. In case you aim perfectly below your foe's head, simply aim upwards a little bit for a headshot.

If you have great accuracy (Truly great). You should aim for head level, but considering the fact you are searching for guides, it's likely that you are struggling in CS:GO.

5. Change crosshair

A poorly designed crosshair can get you killed. Colours that blend in with the map is absolutely risky, like sandy colours (blend in with the ground) or dark blue (looks similar with the background when looking at dark corners).

A good crosshair should use sharp colours, e.g. red, green, light blue. I prefer using tiny dots or circles as lines are unnecessary parts of a crosshair that will sometimes block your view, especially at long range, where the target looks small.

To edit your crosshair, follow these steps:
1. Visit CS:GO Crosshair Generator
2. Edit the crosshair
3. Open CS:GO and change it into windowed mode
4. Open the developer console
5. Type the codes inside one by one
6. There you go! Enjoy the brand new crosshair

Hope this quick guide can help you aim better, I personally use these tips on other FPS games too, like TF2 or ARMA 2.
